So what did ever happen to Vin?

Pouring salt into the wound

So the NLL finally announced the sale and relocation of the New England Black Wolves this afternoon and manged to kick Philly fans in the teeth in the process.

The Black Wolves franchise is one of the most storied in lacrosse history, which includes 28 years and six championships in Philadelphia when the team was known as the Wings. On July 11, 2014 the Wings announced they would be relocating to Uncasville, Conn., where they played as the Black Wolves at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Black Wolves were 8-3 and in first place when the 2019-20 season was cut short due to COVID-19 last March. In their six seasons at Mohegan Sun, the Black Wolves made the playoffs each of the last four completed seasons. The 6 titles during their long stay in Philadelphia is tied for the most in league history with the Toronto Rock.

Back to Albany

The NLL is returning to Albany, with the sale and relocation of the New England Black Wolves.

Can’t help, but feel this is a step back for the league. Relocating to a small market, a market that failed once before.

The Attack played in Albany NY from 2000-2003. What has changed since? Not much we would guess. Plus it is not a good time to be relocating and launching a team in a new market due to the Wuhan Wiggle.

The Attack struggled to draw and turn a profit during their time in Albany. Average attendance was between 3,000 – 4,000 per game.

We suspect we will see a similar outcome this time as well..

Will Albany 2.0 work? If history is any indication we will have to say NO.

The National Lacrosse League will announce Tuesday it is placing a franchise at the Times Union Center, according to a source familiar with the situation. The team plans to begin play in the fall.

The ownership group is led by Oliver Marti, founder of a health-care-focused hedge fund. He’s also a former All-American college and professional lacrosse player who is an investor in the Premier Lacrosse League, an outdoor league.

The Albany Attack, another NLL franchise, played at the Times Union Center from 2000 to 2003 before moving to San Jose, Calif.

Second, like many other challenger properties, our primary revenue is from the in-arena experience, with ticket sales and the game-day experience being the main source of our commercial business. We are – and have been – a digital-first league, which means we are less protected by a massive television rights deal that drive some of the larger North American sports.

New York State arenas reopen Feb 23 But…..

There is always a catch isn’t there?

  • Stadiums that seat 10,000 or more people will be limited to 10% capacity and everyone entering the buildings must present a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of the event.

Present a negative covid-19 test within 72 hours of the event. If a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours is the new normal.

It might just decimate any chance of a walk up crowd especially for events that are NOT  marquee attractions.

Looking at you AHL, and NLL.
